Wang Yi Has a Phone Call with Foreign Minister of Iran Hossein Amir-Abdollahian

On October 15 2023 Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone call with Foreign Minister of Iran Hossein Amir-Abdollahian at the latters request.

Noting that the current situation in the Middle East region is dangerous, and the war is continuously expanding, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said that actions should be taken as soon as possible to stop attacks on civilians in Gaza and alleviate the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Iran hopes to resolve the issue through political means, and stands ready to strengthen communication with China for this endeavor.

Wang Yi said that the pressing task is to promote deescalation of the situation, and prevent a severe humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip from causing more innocent civilian casualties, thereby undermining regional peace and ruining the Middle East peace process. The exercise of the right to self-defense should comply with international law and international humanitarian law, including ensuring the safety of civilians and detained personnel. Countering violence with violence will only cause bigger damage and lead to more serious crises.

Wang Yi said that China supports Islamic countries in strengthening solidarity and coordination and speaking with one voice on the Palestinian question. The international community should take action and oppose moves that harm civilians by any party. The United Nations, especially the Security Council, should earnestly shoulder its responsibilities and play its due role.

Wang Yi emphasized that the fundamental reason for the development of the Palestine-Israel situation today is that the Palestinian people's right to statehood has been put on hold for a long time, their right to survival has not been implemented for a long time, and their right to return has been ignored for a long time. Such a historical injustice should be ended as soon as possible. China will continue to stand on the side of peace and justice, and support the Palestinian people's just cause of safeguarding their national rights.
