Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization meets with Iranian Vice Foreign Minister

On 5 February 2026 the Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Yermekbayev met at the Secretariat with the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran Gharib Abadi.

During the talks, the two sides discussed the current priorities of SCO work in 2026 and exchanged views on the preparations for the regular meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State to be held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, in the autumn of 2026.
Yermekbayev stressed the special significance of this summit, which coincides with the 25th anniversary of the SCO. Against this background, the slogan "Joining Hands on the Road to Peace, Stability, Common Development and Prosperity" proposed by the SCO presidency is rich in meaning and practical significance.
The two sides exchanged views on the implementation of relevant Iranian initiatives in the areas of transport, economy, energy and other areas.The Iranian Vice Foreign Minister pointed out the need to fully unleash the potential of the SCO Secretariat, enhance its role in the organizational work and expand the mandate of the SCO General Secretary. GharibAbadi also said it was necessary for the Secretariat to continue to make recommendations on cooperation in various areas and on improving SCO functions and to present them to member States for their consideration.During the talks, the two sides also held discussions on implementing joint initiatives in the field of regional security, economic cooperation and strengthening SCO institution building.
